I found this
plaque on the front near the main big crescent at Whitby. There was a regatta
celebration in full flow (fairground, classic cars, trampolines, etc.) and
people were rushing to and from it without casting an eye down on to this plaque.
As this poor 19
year old lad lay dying (if he was unlucky enough to linger) did he wonder why
he was the only British Soldier in Whitby to be killed by German firepower? I
assume he was shot by someone in a German aeroplane. Did the gunner who shot
him down remember it? If you’ve flown across to another country and only manage
one kill you’d surely remember it?
