Robert Watmore

I found this plaque on the front near the main big crescent at Whitby. There was a regatta celebration in full flow (fairground, classic cars, trampolines, etc.) and people were rushing to and from it without casting an eye down on to this plaque.

As this poor 19 year old lad lay dying (if he was unlucky enough to linger) did he wonder why he was the only British Soldier in Whitby to be killed by German firepower? I assume he was shot by someone in a German aeroplane. Did the gunner who shot him down remember it? If you’ve flown across to another country and only manage one kill you’d surely remember it?
