This is a warm inviting restaurant and hotel but a naval
officer in the English Civil War was executed here (by gunshot or noose I don’t
know.)
This man was a naval officer at the time of the English
Civil War. He initially sided with the Roundheads. On 15th August 1641 he led a
small band of men to Portsmouth Harbour to capture the ship Henrietta Marie.
However two years later he switched to the royalist side. This cost him his
life and he was executed for piracy in March 1651.
I wondered if
you can stay in the room where the execution took place. Perhaps his ghost is
floating around.
